A WCAG audit report is much more than just a list of accessibility issues found on a website. A well-prepared report explains not only what fails to meet accessibility requirements, but also how those issues affect real users and what should be done to fix them.
In practice, this type of document becomes a roadmap for developers, designers, QA teams, and stakeholders responsible for WCAG 2.1 or WCAG 2.2 compliance. It serves as the foundation for planning accessibility improvements and implementing fixes across the product.
What is included at the beginning of a WCAG report?
Most reports start with general information about the audit itself. This section usually describes the project scope, the WCAG version used during evaluation, the targeted conformance level, and the areas that were tested.
A professional report should also explain the testing methodology. In a proper manual WCAG audit, it is important to demonstrate that the evaluation was not based solely on automated tools, but also on real manual testing performed by accessibility specialists.
This typically includes:
keyboard navigation testing,
screen reader testing,
HTML and ARIA analysis,
testing forms, modals, and JavaScript components,
checking color contrast and focus visibility.
The most important part - identified accessibility issues
The core section of every WCAG audit report is the list of identified accessibility issues. However, a high-quality report should go far beyond generic statements such as “missing alt text” or “low contrast”.
Each issue should be clearly described and explained within context. In practice, a single report entry usually contains the issue description, the related WCAG criterion, the location of the problem, its impact on users, and technical recommendations for fixing it.
Example of an issue description
A good accessibility report should be as specific and actionable as possible. Instead of vague comments, it should present real user scenarios and implementation guidance.
Issue: No visible focus indicator for mobile menu elements.
Criterion: WCAG 2.4.7 Focus Visible
Impact: Keyboard-only users cannot identify which menu item is currently focused.
Recommendation: Add a clearly visible :focus-visible style for all interactive menu elements.
In larger digital products, the number of accessibility issues can become significant. This is why a professional WCAG report should help teams prioritize fixes and plan implementation work effectively.
Accessibility issues are usually categorized by severity - from critical blockers that prevent users from accessing core functionality, to smaller issues that mainly affect usability and user comfort.
For example, missing keyboard support or inaccessible forms would typically be classified as high-priority issues, while smaller visual inconsistencies might be considered medium or low priority.
This structure makes it much easier for development teams to focus on the most impactful accessibility improvements first.
A good WCAG report helps developers
One of the most common problems with low-quality accessibility audits is the lack of practical guidance. Simply identifying an issue is rarely enough, especially in modern web applications with complex frontend architectures.
That is why professional WCAG reports often include:
code examples,
recommended implementations,
screenshots,
ARIA and HTML guidance,
framework-specific recommendations for React, Vue, or other frontend technologies.
This significantly reduces implementation time and lowers the risk of introducing additional accessibility issues during development.
A WCAG report should explain user impact
Digital accessibility is not only about technical compliance. A strong accessibility report should also explain how specific issues affect real users.
This includes describing who may encounter a problem and how it impacts their ability to use the website or application. For example, issues may affect blind users relying on screen readers, keyboard-only users, people with low vision, or users with cognitive disabilities.
Providing this context helps organizations better understand that accessibility is a critical part of product quality, not just a legal checkbox.
Manual WCAG audits vs automated accessibility scans
Automated accessibility tools can only detect a limited subset of accessibility issues. In most cases, they focus on basic technical checks such as missing alt attributes or color contrast failures.
However, they cannot reliably evaluate interface logic, keyboard interactions, focus management, screen reader usability, or the quality of dynamic JavaScript components.
This is why professional WCAG audits should rely primarily on manual testing performed by accessibility experts. Automated tools can support the process, but they cannot replace a real expert audit. We wrote more about this here: automatic audit VS manual audit.
How to recognize a high-quality accessibility report
A good WCAG report is practical, detailed, and technically precise. It should support both business stakeholders and development teams throughout the remediation process.
The best reports do not simply list problems - they explain how to solve them effectively.
If a report contains nothing more than automated scan results, a few screenshots, and generic comments, it is unlikely to provide enough value for real accessibility improvements.
A professional accessibility audit should lead to measurable improvements in the quality and usability of a digital product - not just produce documentation for compliance purposes.
The more detailed and actionable the report is, the easier it becomes for development teams to improve the accessibility of a website or application effectively.
